Adapted Learn to Drive Program
Learning to drive is a big step toward independence, but for many neurodiverse learners, it can also feel overwhelming.
Our Adapted Learn to Drive Program helps neurodiverse learners build the skills, confidence, and independence they need to become safe and successful drivers.

Strengths neurodiverse drivers bring
Many neurodiverse learners have strengths that make them excellent drivers, including following rules, understanding how vehicles work, avoiding unnecessary risks, strong visual memory, deep focus, and careful planning.
Why driving matters
Driving opens doors.
It supports independence, access to employment, connection with friends and community,
and a real sense of achievement.

Where traditional driver training falls short
In our survey of students and parents,
we heard about common barriers:
-
Loud, crowded test environments that make it hard to concentrate
-
Driving theory with tricky wording and heavy memorization
-
Instructors who don't allow enough time to process instructions
-
Families who didn't know about the accommodations available for the learner's test
-
Poor communication between instructors and families about anxiety and learning needs

The program was developed from more than 20 years of experience in specialized education, with input from students, families, and educators. It is endorsed by the Alberta Motor Association (AMA), and participants have shown a 75% improvement in learning outcomes.
Our approach
The program uses structured, patient, and adaptive teaching methods, including:
-
Clear, direct instructions, with time to process before repeating or answering for the learner
-
Visual supports such as pictures and videos
-
Plain explanations of driving terms and acronyms
-
Regular review, and asking learners to repeat instructions back
-
Calming strategies, and knowing when to take a break or reschedule
-
The same expectations as any student, with more time to get there
